Marana

Marana is a town northwest of Tucson in Arizona's desert landscape, sitting at about 2,000 feet (600 meters) elevation. The terrain consists of open desert with sparse vegetation typical of the Sonoran region, spreading across a wide area of mostly undeveloped land.

The area contains the Las Capas archaeological site, featuring one of the oldest cemeteries discovered in the American Southwest. This evidence shows continuous human presence in the region stretching back thousands of years.

The Marana Fall Festival brings together local vendors, families, and performers each year to celebrate seasonal changes through music and food. This event shows how residents connect with one another and their desert surroundings.

The Wild Burro Trailhead provides access to several hiking paths through the natural landscape of the Sonoran Desert. Bring plenty of water and plan hikes for cooler parts of the day, as the desert heat can be intense, especially during warmer months.

Railroad workers named this location after the Spanish word maraña, meaning thicket, while clearing railway lines through the area in the early days of railroad expansion. The name remains a reminder of how the land was once covered with dense brush.
