Southern Pacific 1673, Steam locomotive at Southern Arizona Transportation Museum, Tucson, United States.
Southern Pacific 1673 is a Mogul-type locomotive with a 2-6-0 wheel arrangement built in the early 1900s, now positioned at the museum's entrance. The restored engine displays the engineering features typical of that period.
Built in November 1900 by Schenectady Locomotive Works, it hauled freight for decades between Tucson, Nogales, and Yuma before ceasing operations in 1955. The locomotive was later acquired by the museum.
The locomotive appeared in a 1955 film before Southern Pacific donated it to Tucson, marking when it transitioned from active railroad service to historical preservation.
You can view the restored locomotive daily from outside the museum at 414 North Toole Avenue. Guided tours are available if you want to learn more details about the engine.
The engine switched from coal to oil fuel in 1906 and received a superheater during major rebuilding in 1922. These changes show how locomotives were adapted to changing operational needs.
