Confederate Arizona, Confederate territory in southern New Mexico Territory, United States
Confederate Arizona was a territory in the American Southwest claimed by the Confederate government, extending south of the 34th parallel. The region covered parts of present-day Arizona and New Mexico and was governed by appointed officials.
The area came under Confederate control in 1861 following a military victory and was declared a territory. This control proved short-lived as federal forces soon reclaimed the region.
Local inhabitants maintained trade relationships with Native peoples and worked on agreements for mutual assistance. These connections shaped daily life and relations between different groups across the region.
The site is difficult to visit as little physical structure remains from the historical period today. Those interested in the history will find information in local museums and historical records throughout the region.
The government operated mostly in exile without actual control over the claimed territories. This made it one of the most unusual administrative entities in American history.
