Ciudad Cayalá, Planned community in Guatemala Department, Guatemala.
Ciudad Cayalá is a planned community covering about 538 acres with cobblestone streets, public squares, and mixed-use buildings designed by master planner Léon Krier. The development includes residential apartments, shops, a supermarket, and a convention building in its central district.
The project began in 2003 when Estudio Urbano partnered with master planner Léon Krier to create an extension of Guatemala City based on traditional urban design principles. The collaboration introduced modern living standards while maintaining classical architectural approaches.
The central civic hall features classical design mixed with pyramid-shaped steps inspired by Mayan traditions, serving as a gathering place for the community. This space hosts local events and celebrations that bring residents together.
The central area is walkable and inviting for strolling through cobblestone streets and open squares. Local shops and a supermarket are conveniently located, making it easy to find everyday items and refreshments while exploring.
The design regulations here allow greater creative freedom than in many other places, resulting in contemporary functions blended within classical architectural forms. This flexibility lets architects combine modern solutions with timeless design approaches.
