Santa Tecla

Santa Tecla is a city in southern La Libertad situated at 931 meters elevation between San Salvador Volcano and surrounding mountain ranges. It features Plaza Merliot, the largest shopping center with retail shops, bookstores, and a food court serving the local and visiting populations.

A devastating earthquake in 1854 prompted President José María San Martín to establish this city as the new national capital. It held this status until 1859, when governmental functions were relocated elsewhere.

The Iglesia El Carmen dominates the town with its neo-Gothic design and serves as a gathering place for worship and local celebrations. It reflects how faith remains woven into the daily rhythm of community life here.

Visit during daytime hours when shops and dining venues are open and weekend family activities take place at the main shopping center. The elevated mountain location means temperatures are cooler than lower areas, so dress in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes for the hilly terrain.
