El Salvador, Country in Central America
El Salvador is a Central American country between Honduras and Guatemala, bordered by the Pacific Ocean. The terrain includes volcanic mountain chains, tropical forests, and coastal lowlands, while the Lempa River crosses several regions as the longest waterway.
The territory gained independence from Spain in 1821 and left the Central American Confederation in 1841. A civil war between 1979 and 1992 ended with peace agreements that stabilized the country.
Most people here speak Spanish with regional variations that differ from neighboring countries. Street vendors sell pupusas at nearly every corner, and families often gather for dinner to share these filled corn tortillas together.
The United States dollar serves as official currency, and Spanish is the main language throughout the country. International flights reach Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero Airport, and buses connect major cities to each other.
Since 2021, Bitcoin has been legal tender here, making this country the first worldwide to officially adopt cryptocurrency. Acceptance among merchants remains varied, though, and not all shops use digital payments in daily operations.
