Sonsonate Department extends across 1,226 square kilometers of fertile volcanic soil, containing four primary regions: Central, Western, Northern, and Eastern sections.
The department, established in 1824, temporarily served as the second capital of the Federal Republic of Central America during 1834.
The department preserves indigenous Pipil traditions through local festivals, music performances, traditional dances, and preparation of regional corn-based dishes.
The region receives over 2,000 millimeters of annual rainfall with temperatures around 25°C, supporting agricultural production throughout its territory.
The name Sonsonate translates to Place of 400 Rivers, reflecting the numerous waterways that flow through this western Salvadoran territory.
