Monumento al Divino, Religious monument at Plaza El Salvador del Mundo, San Salvador, El Salvador.
The Monumento al Divino is a religious monument on Plaza El Salvador del Mundo in central San Salvador. A white statue of Jesus Christ stands on a sphere representing Earth and rises on a four-sided concrete pedestal reaching 18 meters (59 feet) into the air.
The pedestal originally came from the tomb of President Manuel Enrique Araujo and was inaugurated in November 1942 during the first National Eucharistic Congress. After the 1986 earthquake, the monument was rebuilt through a national campaign called Lift up your soul Salvadoran.
The monument appears on banknotes and vehicle plates across the country and serves as a national symbol for El Salvador. Local residents use the surrounding plaza for gatherings and celebrations, letting visitors observe the central role this place holds in public life.
Visitors reach the monument through Plaza Salvador del Mundo, which offers walkways and viewing areas. The plaza sits on a main road, so you can easily explore it on foot during the day.
The 1986 earthquake destroyed the original completely, prompting a nationwide fundraising campaign to rebuild it. The campaign brought together Salvadorans from all walks of life to restore this landmark.
