Ilopango, Caldera volcano near San Salvador, El Salvador
The Ilopango caldera stretches 8 by 11 kilometers with steep walls rising 500 meters above a large crater lake east of San Salvador.
The massive Tierra Blanca eruption between 410 and 535 CE created the current caldera, destroying Mayan settlements and disrupting regional trade networks.
The lake waters support local fishing communities who catch mojarras and guapotes, maintaining traditional fishing practices passed through generations.
Multiple resorts and recreational facilities along the lakeshore provide water activities, swimming areas, and boat rentals throughout the year.
The Islas Quemadas, formed during the 1879 eruption, represent a cluster of small islands marking the summit of a submerged lava dome.
