El Boqueron National Park

El Boqueron National Park is a protected area centered on an extinct volcano near San Salvador. The landscape is dominated by a large crater roughly 1.5 kilometers across, with a smaller crater formation called Boqueroncito nested at its center.

The volcano last erupted in 1917 and has remained dormant since then. This final eruption caused the freshwater lake that filled the crater to vanish, permanently reshaping the geological structure of the area.

The park draws visitors interested in learning about El Salvador's volcanic past and natural environment. People come to understand the geological importance of this landscape and how it shapes the country's identity.

The grounds are hilly and best explored on foot using marked trails, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The higher elevation means cooler weather than in the city, so bring layers or a light jacket.

Though the crater appears dry, it hosts seasonal water sources and rich plant life adapted to these particular conditions. This specialized vegetation makes it a place where nature renews itself in unexpected ways.
