Chiquimula Department

The department spans across mountainous terrain with temperatures reaching 42°C and contains two major drainage basins flowing to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Spanish forces conducted their initial exploration of the region in 1524, led by commanders Hernando de Chavez, Juan Duran, Bartolome Becerra, and Cristobal Salvatierra.

The name originates from Nahuatl word chiquimoltlan, while the region maintains a mixed population of Chorti Maya and Ladino communities.

Located 174 kilometers from Guatemala City, the department contains eleven municipalities and connects to Honduras through its eastern border.

The department produces substantial quantities of rice, coffee, and beans while supporting a traditional palm handicrafts industry throughout its territory.
