Lake Yojoa, Natural lake in central Honduras.

Lake Yojoa is Honduras's only natural lake, measuring 16 km long and 6 km wide at 680 m above sea level. It lies in a volcanic depression, with steep mountains rising over 2,600 m on the west and the Cerro Azul Meámbar park on the east. The water appears greyish-green with faint ripples, and its irregular shoreline includes a narrow arm extending north.

Lake Yojoa lies in a depression formed by volcanoes, and the surrounding volcanic field consists of Pleistocene to Holocene scoria cones, craters and lava flows. The lake is the only natural lake in Honduras, and since 2005 it has been recognised as a Ramsar site.

Local communities depend on fishing and farming coffee, fruits, and vegetables on the surrounding slopes. These daily activities shape how people live and work around the lake.

The lake sits directly beside the main highway connecting Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, making access straightforward. Several restaurants along the shore serve fresh fish caught locally.

The area around the lake is one of Central America's most important bird watching destinations. Visitors can observe hundreds of bird species here, making it exceptional for nature lovers.
