Lake Yojoa

Lake Yojoa sits in central Honduras and is surrounded by two national parks: Santa Barbara and Cerro Azul Meambar. The water is relatively shallow and ringed by forested slopes that descend to the shoreline.

The lake formed through ancient volcanic activity that shaped lava flows and scoria cones across the landscape. These geological features remain visible in the terrain around the shoreline today.

Local communities depend on fishing and farming coffee, fruits, and vegetables on the surrounding slopes. These daily activities shape how people live and work around the lake.

The lake sits directly beside the main highway connecting Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, making access straightforward. Several restaurants along the shore serve fresh fish caught locally.

The area around the lake is one of Central America's most important bird watching destinations. Visitors can observe hundreds of bird species here, making it exceptional for nature lovers.
