César Gaviria Trujillo Viaduct

César Gaviria Trujillo Viaduct, Cable-stayed bridge in Pereira, Colombia.

The César Gaviria Trujillo Viaduct is a cable-stayed bridge in Pereira, Colombia, stretching 704 meters across the Otún River Valley and linking Pereira with Dosquebradas through four traffic lanes. Made from concrete, it rises 55 meters high and is supported by steel cables radiating from two prominent towers.

A Brazilian and German consortium built the structure between 1994 and 1997, reducing travel time between the two cities by forty minutes. Before its completion, travelers had to take a longer detour through the rugged terrain of the region.

Named after César Gaviria Trujillo, the former Colombian president who held office from 1990 to 1994 and was born in Pereira, the bridge carries his legacy. Locals cross it daily on their way to work or shopping, using it as a link between the city and the neighboring municipality.

The bridge features protective barriers along the edges, installed in 2008 to improve safety. Vehicles of all sizes use the four traffic lanes, which remain accessible throughout the day.

The central span extends 211 meters between two 56-meter towers, making it one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in South America at the time of completion. The structure uses an asymmetric design that adapts to the natural topography of the valley.
