The Botanical Garden is a facility at the Technological University of Pereira displaying Andean forest vegetation and collections of native plant species. The grounds are organized through pathways that guide visitors through different ecosystems and observation points.
The university established this garden in the 1980s as a conservation project for forest lands in the region. Since then it has grown into a learning space for students and the public while documenting the diversity of local flora.
The garden's collections are organised around native Andean forest plants of the coffee-growing region, chosen for their economic, cultural or conservation value. Among the existing collections are a bambusetum, an orchidarium, and groups of Heliconiaceae, Costaceae, Arecaceae, Araceae, Magnoliaceae, Lauraceae, Meliaceae, ferns and aromatic plants. The garden also takes part in Risaralda's inter-institutional environmental education committees.
Visit in early morning when it is cooler and the plants look fresh, making observation more comfortable. Wear sturdy shoes since the pathways are natural and some areas may be damp or slippery.
The garden is classified as "Natural or Wild" by BGCI: conservation happens in 12.7 hectares of vegetation that grew on its own rather than in planted ornamental beds. Look for the 1.7-hectare wetland and the 1,500 metres of paths built from 2003, with a wooden pier and lookout points.
