Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Pobreza

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Poverty is a house of worship on the western side of Plaza de Bolívar featuring a central nave, two lateral sections, and multiple chapels. The structure combines traditional European architecture with local materials and construction methods.

The cathedral was founded in 1834 and suffered earthquakes in 1906 and 1999 that required extensive repairs. The rebuilding efforts uncovered archaeological remains from the era of Cartago Viejo.

The cathedral displays medieval Romanesque and Byzantine-style elements with exposed brick walls that visitors can observe throughout the interior. Religious paintings by José Moreno from the 20th century depicting biblical scenes are displayed within its chapels.

The building is located between streets 20 and 21 near Carrera 7 in the city center. Access is somewhat limited, but visitors can explore the interior and observe the architectural details.

The dome was built using thousands of pieces of local wood selected specifically for its durability and quality. This detail shows how European design principles were combined with Colombian materials and craftsmanship.
