Torre de Herveo

Torre de Herveo, Wooden tower in Comuna Palogrande, Colombia.

The Torre de Herveo is a wooden tower constructed from 1,470 timber blocks made of Guaiac, Mahogany, Bay, and Comino wood species. The lattice design distributed weight effectively while allowing wind to pass through the structure.

The structure was built between 1922 and 1961 to support a cable transport system linking Manizales with Mariquita. When the transportation line ceased operations in 1961, the tower was preserved as a historical monument.

The tower represents engineering innovation during Colombia's coffee trade expansion and marks a period of economic growth in the Manizales region. It stands as a testament to the technical skills that local builders developed during this prosperous era.

The tower is located near the National University of Manizales Faculty of Architecture and remains visible from public roads throughout the day. The structure can be viewed from various angles depending on your position in the surrounding area.

Engineer James Lindsay designed this transportation tower that later transformed into a monument after the cable system ceased operations in 1961. His innovative wooden construction was a remarkable technical achievement for that era.
