Viceroy's House is a colonial museum in Cartago displaying traditional Andalusian architecture with thick quarry stone walls and distinctive coffered ceilings. The building showcases impressive craftsmanship from its era, with substantial clay brick structures that have remained standing without foundations over the centuries.

Sebastián de Marisancena, a Spanish Creole born in Cartago, built the house at the end of the 18th century as a family residence. In 1791 he used a license from the Viceroy to found San Sebastián de la Balsa, today Alcalá, on inherited land at Piedra de Moler. The house stayed with his heirs for 150 years; in 1937 the northern part was sold, and in 1948 the Valle del Cauca Assembly declared it a public utility and ceded that part to the municipality. The southern part passed to Juan Evangelista Quintana Rentería in 1946, to the National Tourism Corporation in 1970, and to the municipality in 2011.

The house is also known as Casa de Marisancena or Casa de la Cadena, and its name as Viceroy's House comes from popular tradition, not from documents. Inside, the Pedro Morales Pino Music Conservatory, founded in 1954, shares the rooms with the Luis Alfonso Delgado History Center. The museum displays old photographs of Cartago from the late 19th to mid-20th century and copies of the "Alegría de Leer" primers by Juan Evangelista Quintana Rentería.

The house stands at Calle 13 No. 4-29 and 4-53, in the centre of Cartago. The Pedro Morales Pino Conservatory and the Luis Alfonso Delgado History Centre, with the city archive, occupy the building. The municipality owns it and opened it to visitors as the Casa del Virrey Museum.

The Historical Archive of Cartago preserves over 400 years of written records and documents the municipality's story since its early colonial period. This extensive collection makes it an important source for anyone interested in understanding the region's past.
