Chiquinquirá

Chiquinquirá is a municipality in western Boyacá located at about 2,556 meters elevation in mountainous terrain. The town consists of a central urban core with multiple neighborhoods and surrounding rural areas, with the Basilica forming the focal point.

The settlement originated on Muisca territories and developed into a major religious center following reported appearances of the Virgin Mary in the 16th century. These events established it as one of the country's most important pilgrimage destinations.

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary shapes daily life here as people move through the town centered around its spiritual importance. Pilgrims from across the country arrive regularly to participate in religious services and processions that define the local calendar.

The location sits at high elevation, so temperatures remain cool year-round at around 15°C, making layered clothing advisable. Road connections to Bogotá are available with regular public transportation service, making the journey straightforward for visitors.

A lesser-known aspect is that the town experienced a serious food contamination incident in 1967 that prompted stricter national food safety standards. This event left a lasting mark on the local community and its historical memory.
