Playa Mal País, Strand in Costa Rica
Playa Mal País is a beach on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. The shoreline consists mainly of rocky and volcanic coastal formations interrupted by small sandy coves, where dense jungle extends down to the water's edge.
The area began as a quiet fishing village, retaining its rustic appearance to this day. Unlike nearby Santa Teresa, which has developed significantly in recent decades, Mal País remains little changed and keeps its original character as a small coastal settlement.
The name Mal País means "bad land" in Spanish, yet today it reflects little about how people experience this place. The village has kept its authentic character, with simple homes, an active fishing port, and a relaxed community used by fishermen and visitors who value the untouched nature.
The beach is easiest to reach by car or ATV; driving on the peninsula's hilly roads can be difficult, especially during the rainy season from May to November. The beach itself is safest to explore during daylight, and it is wise to avoid leaving belongings unattended or walking alone on the beach at night.
The neighboring Playa Cuevas is called the Secret Beach because the narrow road to it is easy to miss, yet at low tide it is a quiet spot for snorkeling with white sand and rocky formations. Visitors should be cautious at this cove, as there have been occasional safety concerns.
