Puntarenas Province, Province on the Pacific coast, Costa Rica

Puntarenas is a province along Costa Rica's Pacific coast, stretching across several thousand square kilometers. The region comprises eleven administrative cantons with varied landscapes, from coastal areas to highland zones.

The region gained its provincial status in 1858 through legislative decree after developing from an earlier administrative area. The Pacific coast gradually became an economic center through trade and port development.

Multiple indigenous communities call this place home, and their traditions remain visible in daily life today. The people maintain close ties with the land through practices that have been passed down for generations.

The Port of Caldera serves visitors as the main gateway to the Pacific coast and provides connections to various locations throughout the region. Getting around becomes easier when you learn about road conditions beforehand, since some areas are more remote than others.

Isla del Coco sits roughly 500 kilometers offshore in the Pacific and belongs to this province. The island is home to a large number of animal and plant species found nowhere else, making it a truly distinct place.
