Buenos Aires Canton, Administrative canton in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica.
Buenos Aires Canton is an administrative division in Puntarenas Province that spans nine districts across roughly 400 meters of elevation. The territory covers around 2,400 square kilometers and consists of rural and forested landscapes connected through local roads.
This canton officially separated from Osa Municipality on July 29, 1940, marking a key administrative change in Costa Rica's southern region. The separation created an independent governing body for the growing communities in this area.
The territory is home to indigenous groups such as the Boruca people, who live in specific districts and continue their traditional ways of life today.
The area is well connected through the Inter-American Highway South, providing access to all nine districts. Each district has its own postal code, making navigation and local logistics straightforward.
The territory has very low population density, meaning natural spaces and undeveloped land dominate the landscape. This makes it one of the less densely settled regions in the country's southern zone.
