Nauyaca Waterfalls, Natural waterfall reserve in San José Province, Costa Rica

Nauyaca Waterfalls is a natural reserve in San Jose Province featuring two main cascades of varying heights that drop into interconnected pools. The site includes multiple swimming basins surrounded by canyon walls and lush vegetation throughout the area.

A local family named Don Lulo first developed the site into a tourist destination by creating access routes and basic infrastructure. This early effort transformed what was once a remote natural location into the managed reserve that exists today.

The site holds meaning for both locals and visitors seeking connection with nature and the raw power of flowing water. The way people spend time here, swimming, photographing, and sitting quietly by the cascades, shows how this place serves as a natural refuge.

The site can be reached by hiking trail, horseback tour, or four-wheel-drive vehicle, giving you options based on your fitness level and preference. Wear comfortable shoes and bring swimwear, as the trails are muddy and the pools offer refreshing dips along the way.

The lower cascade creates an exceptionally deep pool ideal for swimming, while the canyon surrounding it reaches an impressive width that makes visitors feel small against the landscape. Few people realize how spacious and secluded the entire complex feels once you reach the main pools.
