Plaza 5 de Mayo, Public square and park in Santa Ana district, Panama City, Panama
The Plaza 5 de Mayo stands at the intersection of Central Avenue, featuring open spaces, granite flooring, and commemorative monuments across 850 square meters.
Built between 1914 and 1916, the plaza honors six firefighters who died during the Polvorín explosion, when a powder factory caught fire on May 5, 1914.
The plaza functions as a central gathering space for Panama City residents, hosting numerous public events, demonstrations, and celebrations throughout the year.
The square connects to major transportation networks, including the 5 de Mayo Metro Station, and provides access to the National Institute of Culture.
In 2017, the plaza underwent extensive renovation works to restore its original appearance, including new accessibility features and removal of existing fountains.
