Ancón Hill, Transmitter mast on hill summit in Panama City, Panama.
Ancón Hill is a forested elevation with a telecommunications tower at its summit in Panama City. The peak offers expansive views across the city and the Panama Canal, with several observation points positioned along the climbing route.
The hill served as a strategic observation point during Panama Canal construction when the United States military monitored the surrounding area. After the canal's completion, the site retained military importance before eventually becoming accessible to the public.
A monument at the summit honors poet Amelia Denis de Icaza and her verses about the hill. The memorial connects local identity with the place and is recognized by visitors as an important landmark for the city.
The hike to the summit starts with check-in at the guard station and takes about one to two hours to complete. The trail is well-marked with moderate incline, so comfortable shoes and plenty of water are advisable.
An oversized Panamanian flag remains continuously raised at the summit, which is unusual in practice. The flag stays hoisted unlike others across the nation that follow a daily raising and lowering routine.
