Municipio Cabimas, Municipality in Zulia State, Venezuela.
Municipio Cabimas is located along the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo in Zulia State and divided into nine administrative parishes. The territory blends urban and rural areas served by road connections and Oro Negro Airport in Punta Gorda parish.
The territory grew from a small fishing settlement into a major administrative division after oil was discovered in 1917 through the Santa Barbara well. This discovery reshaped the region's economy and population growth.
The House of Culture preserves local artistic life through its library, archaeological displays, and performing arts schools. Visitors can experience how the community maintains its traditions today.
Oro Negro Airport provides a main connection to other regions, particularly Caracas. The rainy season can affect road access to some areas, so timing your visit depends on current weather conditions.
The name comes from the Carib word Cabima, referring to the Copaiba tree whose trunk produces a medicinal oil. This tree held special importance for indigenous people and its memory remains in the municipality's name.
