Queen Juliana Bridge, Steel road bridge in Willemstad, Curaçao.
Queen Juliana Bridge is a steel road bridge crossing St. Anna Bay, stretching roughly 500 meters across the water. It rises about 56 meters above the water surface to allow large vessels to pass through to the harbor, with four lanes serving traffic from both shores.
The bridge was constructed in the 1960s, but a serious accident occurred during building when a section collapsed. This led to a complete reconstruction with improved structural designs.
The bridge links Punda and Otrobanda, two distinct neighborhoods that were historically separated by water. Residents cross it daily, and it has become woven into the everyday fabric of how people move through the city.
The bridge is busiest during midday hours, so crossing early morning or late afternoon helps avoid heavy traffic. Pedestrians can walk across it, though automobile traffic can be quite intense during rush times.
The bridge features a distinctive design with inclined legs and a rigid frame structure that reflected advanced engineering methods of its time. This type of construction approach was noteworthy when the bridge was completed.
