Curaçao Museum, History museum in Willemstad, Curaçao
The Curaçao Museum displays historical objects, furniture, and artifacts within a former military hospital building constructed in 1853 in Willemstad. The collections span from the 18th through early 20th centuries and are arranged across several rooms.
The museum was established in 1948 after Chris Engels founded the Curaçao Museum Foundation. Government support and community donations enabled the creation of the island's first comprehensive collection documenting local history.
The collections feature paintings, sculptures, and drawings that reflect different phases of local artistic tradition. A reconstructed traditional kitchen room shows how people once lived and prepared food on the island.
The museum is open on different days of the week with varying hours, so checking ahead helps you plan your visit accordingly. Early morning visits tend to be quieter, allowing you to explore the rooms at a comfortable pace.
The museum preserves the cockpit of the Snip, the first airplane to cross the ocean from the Netherlands to the island. A locomotive from the early mining railway is also part of the collection, telling of the industrial past.
