Coatepec Harinas, Municipality in State of Mexico, Mexico.
Coatepec Harinas is a municipality in the State of Mexico situated in a mountainous region with elevations between 1,900 and 3,000 meters. The territory covers roughly 35.50 square kilometers and is divided into multiple smaller settlements and rural communities.
The settlement originated as Coauhtepetl between 650 and 750 AD as an early indigenous community. Spanish forces under Gonzalo de Sandoval took control between 1522 and 1524, bringing new administrative and economic systems to the region.
The name comes from the Nahuatl word Coauhtepetl, meaning serpent hill, and Harinas was added in 1825 when local flour production became important. Today you can see traces of this agricultural heritage throughout the region in the orchards and the way communities are organized around farming.
This is a mountainous area, so visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and higher elevations when moving between communities. The main roads connecting the settlements pass through agricultural areas and offer the most accessible routes for travel throughout the region.
The area is known for its extensive peach orchards and fruit tree plantations supported by abundant water sources. The harvest follows the natural rhythm of the seasons, constantly transforming the landscape and the activities within the communities.
