Zacango Zoo, Wildlife conservation park in Calimaya, Mexico.
Zacango Zoo is a wildlife park in Calimaya, State of Mexico, roughly 9 miles (15 kilometers) south of Toluca. The grounds roll over gentle hills planted with mature trees, where enclosures hold mammals, birds and reptiles from many parts of the world.
The land served as a Franciscan hacienda from the 16th century onward, then passed through farming hands before the State of Mexico government opened the zoo in August 1981. That transition preserved the old trees and some original stone walls visible near the entrance today.
The zoo maintains educational programs focused on Mexican wildlife preservation, featuring native species such as the Mexican gray wolf and regional reptiles.
The park sits roughly 20 minutes from Toluca's center and opens daily from 11 AM to 6 PM, with a large parking area at the entrance. Sturdy shoes help on sloped sections, and shade under the trees offers relief on warm afternoons.
The park's reptile collection ranks among the largest in Latin America and displays rare snakes such as the Gaboon viper and green mamba. Visitors can also see an albino python whose pale skin sets it apart from other specimens.
