American Park, also known as Parque América or Parque de las Américas, is a public park on Avenida Horacio in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City. It features wide walkways, shaded seating areas, and a fountain at each end of the space.
The park was created in the mid-20th century, when Polanco was still a quiet area with farms and cedar-lined streets. Its name refers to the independence movements in Latin America led by Simón Bolívar and to the founding of the Organization of American States in 1948.
The park sits in the heart of Polanco, one of the most recognizable neighborhoods in Mexico City. Busts and statues inside it, including a gift from Bolivia and a tribute to the founder of Rotary International, give the space an international character that visitors can notice while walking through.
The park runs along Avenida Horacio and is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets of Polanco. Several other green spaces are nearby, making it a good starting point for a longer walk through the area.
Although the park now sits in the middle of a busy part of the city, the streets around it were once lined with cedar trees and the area was mostly open farmland. The sculptures inside are gifts from other countries in the Western Hemisphere, making it one of the few spots in the city where you can find tangible symbols of international friendship in a public green space.
