Boca Chica is a coastal region in Cameron County, Texas, stretching along a narrow peninsula between the Rio Grande and the Gulf of Mexico. The area features flat tidal plains, open beaches, and dunes used by seabirds and migratory species.
In May 1865 the Battle of Palmito Ranch took place here, the final land engagement between Union and Confederate forces. Traces of Mexican land grants and early ranch settlements still remind visitors of the frontier period along this coast.
The Spanish name Boca Chica translates as little mouth, referring to the narrow opening between the gulf and Laguna Madre. Today you can watch shorebirds probing the mudflats for crabs and small fish while anglers cast lines from the sandy edges.
Access follows a single road heading east from the mainland, often exposed to strong winds. The area works best at low tide when tidal flats are exposed and birdwatching becomes easier.
Since 2018 SpaceX has used this remote coast as Starbase, a development and test site for large rockets. Visitors now see tall metal towers and launch facilities alongside dunes and tidal flats, radically changing the character of the landscape.
