The San Antonio Museum of Art occupies a restored former Lone Star Brewery building along River Walk and displays artworks from different periods and cultures across multiple galleries. The collections include pieces from the Mediterranean region, Latin America, Asia, and contemporary art movements, offering a broad overview of human creativity.
The Lone Star Brewery complex dates from 1886. The San Antonio Museum Association, founded in 1926 with the Witte Memorial Museum, purchased the former brewery on the recommendation of Jack McGregor as art acquisitions grew. After a $7.2 million renovation, the San Antonio Museum of Art opened there on March 1, 1981.
The museum houses one of the largest collections of ancient Mediterranean art in the southern United States, making it a major center for this type of artwork in the region. Alongside these pieces, visitors encounter Latin American, Asian, and contemporary works that represent different artistic traditions and perspectives.
The museum is fully accessible for wheelchair users and offers guided tours available in multiple languages. Visitors should plan for several hours to explore the various galleries at their own pace.
From 1982 to 1985 the museum ran a heritage streetcar, car 300, built in 1913 and nicknamed "Old 300". It ran on the old Texas Transportation Company tracks behind the building, twice a day on weekdays and six times on weekends, until budget cuts ended the service. The car was later sold to a trolley association in Astoria, Oregon.
