Gruene Hall, Dance hall in New Braunfels, United States
Gruene Hall is a dance hall in New Braunfels, Texas, that hosts live music to this day. The building rests on brick pillars and protects its wooden floor through open side walls that let air move through during warm weather.
The hall opened in 1878 and served the area's farmers as a meeting place for dance and music. It went through several ownership changes in the 20th century but kept its original character throughout.
The hall takes its name from the German immigrant Heinrich Gruene, whose family ran a cotton farm and businesses in the area. The walls carry enamel signs and painted advertisements for local businesses that visitors can still see today.
Entry is free as long as space is available, and concerts run throughout the year. You can stand right near the stage or sit at simple wooden tables farther back.
The roof of corrugated tin helps with the acoustics and amplifies the sound of guitars and voices in the room. The floor was never replaced with concrete because wood makes dancing more comfortable.
