Wonder World, Theme park and cave system in San Marcos, Texas.
Wonder World is a theme park in San Marcos, Texas, built around a limestone cave system that was formed by an ancient earthquake along the Balcones Fault. The park includes underground cave passages, an observation tower called the Tejas Tower, and a small wildlife area on the grounds.
The caves were found by accident in 1893 when workers drilled a water well and broke through into the underground system. The land was later developed into a public attraction, and it has remained one of Texas's oldest operating tourist sites.
Wonder World draws school groups and families who come to see how an earthquake can shape rock over time. The displays are hands-on, making it easy for visitors of all ages to connect with what they are looking at underground.
The caves stay at a steady temperature of around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius) throughout the year, so a light layer is useful even on hot days. The tour involves stairs and uneven ground, so sturdy shoes make a real difference when walking through the passages.
Unlike most limestone caves, which are shaped by water over time, these caves were torn open by tectonic movement along the Balcones Fault, making them one of the few known earthquake-formed cave systems in the world. This origin also means the cave walls show sharp fractures rather than the smooth curves you would normally expect underground.
