Old Main

Old Main is a university building in San Marcos constructed in Gothic Revival style, featuring stone walls, pointed arches, and tall spires throughout its design. The exterior displays detailed ornamental work and window arrangements that characterize the late nineteenth century construction.

The structure was completed in the late 1880s as the first permanent building of Southwest Texas State Normal School. It established the foundation for what became Texas State University and continues to define the institution's historical role in the region.

The building serves as a gathering point for the university community and connects the academic mission to its physical setting. Students and visitors often pause here to appreciate how the structure anchors campus life and traditions.

The building can be visited during regular university hours and is easily located on the main campus grounds. The north-facing side offers the best viewing angle for observing the full architectural detail of the spires and stonework.

The building was the sole structural foundation of an institution originally founded as a teacher training school. These humble beginnings stand in sharp contrast to its present role as a landmark of a large modern university.
