Pearland, Growing suburban city in Texas, United States
Pearland is a city south of the Houston metropolitan area that spans parts of three counties. The area of roughly 123 square kilometers (47.5 square miles) includes residential zones, business districts and some green spaces along roads and main traffic routes.
A Polish immigrant gave the place its name in 1894 when a railway line was built through the area. The settlement grew slowly during the 20th century until it became a Houston suburb very quickly after the year 2000.
The name comes from the pear trees that once grew in the area and contributed to the founding of the settlement. Today shopping centers, residential neighborhoods and commercial districts shape the cityscape, while residents often commute to Houston or work in local businesses.
Most streets are wide and designed for cars, so a vehicle is often needed to get around. A branch of the University of Houston operates a campus here, and several school districts serve families in the surrounding area.
The population more than doubled between 2000 and 2010, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Many new residential areas appeared in a short time, and today construction sites and freshly paved roads are visible everywhere.
