Matagorda Island Lighthouse

Matagorda Island Lighthouse is a conical cast iron tower standing 24 meters tall on an island off the Texas coast. The structure has guided vessels through the passage to the nearby bay since its original construction.

The lighthouse was founded in 1852 when the Texas government authorized its construction. Following damage during the American Civil War, major portions were rebuilt in 1873.

The keepers and their families shaped maritime life on this island for generations, and their memory lives on in a nearby burial ground. Visitors can sense the strong bond between people and the sea that defined this place for over a century.

You need a boat to reach the island where the lighthouse stands, and certain permits are required depending on your planned activities. Plan ahead for travel time and check conditions before visiting.

In 1999 a solar-powered system was installed to reactivate the dormant tower and bring it back into service. This modern technology transformed a historic structure into a working beacon once again.
