Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge on the Gulf Coast of Texas, United States.
The refuge spans 115,324 acres of coastal wetlands, blackjack oak thickets, freshwater ponds, and grasslands along San Antonio Bay.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the refuge through Executive Order 7784 in 1937 to protect migratory waterfowl populations.
The refuge maintains crucial conservation programs for whooping cranes, which have increased their numbers from 15 to several hundred since 1940.
Visitors access the refuge through an auto tour route and walking trails, with the Visitor Center operating daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The protected area includes Matagorda Island, a 38-mile barrier island that serves as a critical habitat for over 400 bird species.
