Permian High School, Public high school in Odessa, United States
Permian High School is a public high school in Odessa, Texas, serving more than 3,600 students in grades 9 through 12. The campus includes multiple buildings with classrooms, gymnasiums, a stadium, and practice fields spread across an expansive site.
The institution opened in 1959 under the name of the Permian Basin, the geological formation holding oil and gas deposits beneath the region. An expansion in 2015 brought additional classrooms and facilities for the growing student body.
The football team won six state titles and inspired the book Friday Night Lights about high school sports in rural Texas. Friday evenings in autumn draw thousands of spectators to the stadium, where the sport becomes the social center of the community.
Visits outside school hours are possible for events and games, with the main building typically closed during school time. Parking areas surround the campus, and access to sports facilities happens through separate entrances.
The Satin Strings orchestra performed at presidential inaugurations and D-Day commemorations, representing the school at national ceremonies. These appearances bring students from West Texas to stages in the capital and at historical sites in Europe.
