Fort Concho, Military fort and National Historic Landmark in San Angelo, United States.
Fort Concho is a former garrison in San Angelo, Texas, made up of more than twenty buildings constructed from pale limestone. The complex includes enlisted quarters, officers' residences, a medical facility, and several support structures spread across roughly 16 hectares.
The garrison was established in 1867 and served as a base for patrols protecting settlers and trade routes across west Texas. It remained active until 1889 and housed several cavalry units, including African American regiments.
The museum displays uniforms, weapons, and personal belongings used by soldiers stationed here in the late 19th century. Visitors can step into reconstructed rooms and see how daily routines unfolded in a remote garrison.
The grounds are open daily, and entry begins at a visitor center that provides maps and printed guides. A walking route takes you through several accessible buildings displaying period furnishings and objects.
The stone construction from the 1870s is less common in this region than timber framing and reflects the army's adaptation to local materials. Inside, original pine window frames and doors remain, brought in from other regions by wagon.
