Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake, boardwalk in Austin, Texas, U.S
The Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake is a concrete path running along the water through central Austin, supported by over 300 piers and built with pre-cast planks. The structure spans roughly 7,250 feet with seven viewing areas, LED lighting throughout, and one wheelchair-accessible pier for visitor use.
The Boardwalk project began with plans approved in 2008, funded through city money and local donations. Construction ran from 2012 to 2014, filling in a missing 1.3-mile gap and completing the full loop around Lady Bird Lake.
Lady Bird Lake is named after Claudia Alta Johnson, wife of a former US president and a Texas conservation advocate. The artwork 'Belting It Out' features 36 bronze belts with lyrics from Texas songwriters, bringing local musical heritage into the everyday walk.
The Boardwalk is open daily from 5 am to midnight and accessible at any time thanks to LED lighting along the path. Access points are located at South Lakeshore Boulevard parking, the Riverside and IH35 intersection, and other nearby entrances, with free parking available.
The Boardwalk surface is made of roughly 2,200 pre-cast concrete planks designed to look like wooden boards, creating a distinctive feel underfoot. This design choice brings a natural, warm appearance to the modern structure while serving walkers, runners, and cyclists in the heart of the city.
