Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, National Historical Park in Johnson City, Texas.
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is a memorial site in the Texas Hill Country that includes several buildings and properties connected to the life of the 36th president. The complex spans two counties and includes both his birthplace and the later family home.
Johnson was born in 1908 in a small house near the Pedernales River and later grew up in Johnson City. After his presidency he returned to the property in 1969 and spent his final years there until 1973.
The grounds reflect Johnson's working style during his presidency, when he often received guests at the ranch and held political discussions outdoors. Visitors today see the rooms where important decisions about American social policy in the 1960s were discussed.
Touring happens on your own or with a guide, depending on the chosen area of the park. A visitor center provides information and serves as a starting point for exploring the different locations.
The property was also a working cattle ranch during the presidency, where Johnson regularly combined state business with ranch work. Presidential planes landed on a specially built airstrip right next to the grazing fields.
