Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site, State park and historic site in Gillespie County, Texas.
This is a 732-acre combination of nature preserve and historic site centered on the working Sauer-Beckmann Farm, native wildflower fields, and bison herds along the Pedernales River. The landscape shifts between open pastures, forested riverbanks, and cultivated farmland that reflects the region's past.
The land was donated in 1965 as a tribute to President Johnson, and the park opened in 1970. The farm buildings date from the early 1900s and preserve the story of German-American settlers during that era.
The Sauer-Beckmann farmhouse demonstrates how German settlers lived and worked, with interpreters in period clothing showing traditional farming methods and daily practices.
The visitor center is located on State Park Road 52 in Stonewall and operates daily from 8:30 AM to 4 PM. Walking trails cover the property, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water during hot months.
The property also keeps Texas Longhorn cattle alongside the bison herds, representing the livestock of earlier ranching generations. This rare mix of European farming history and Texas ranch culture on a single site is noteworthy.
