Georgetown is a city in Williamson County, Texas, located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Austin, organized around a central square with Victorian buildings. Restaurants and shops occupy historic structures, while the San Gabriel River flows through the surrounding area.
The city was founded in 1848 and named after George Washington Glasscock, an early settler who donated land for the community. Southwestern University relocated here in 1873, bringing education and growth to the region.
The Palace Theatre hosts regular performances in an early twentieth-century building, while local musicians often play on the square. Downtown preserves its historic architecture, with many buildings still serving as shops and cafés.
Downtown can be explored on foot, with most shops and restaurants within a few blocks of the square. Lake Georgetown offers water activities and trails, reachable by car in about ten minutes from the city center.
The Inner Space Cavern was discovered in 1963 during highway construction when drills broke through the ceiling of a chamber. The cave contains formations developed over millions of years and is now accessible through underground pathways.
