Aquilla Lake, body of water
Aquilla Lake is a reservoir in Texas, located about 35 miles north of Waco near Hillsboro and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The earthen dam spans nearly 2 miles and holds water that varies with rainfall, while the lake itself covers roughly 3,100 acres at normal levels and reaches depths of almost 60 feet.
Construction of the dam began in summer 1978 and finished in spring 1983, with water storage beginning in late April that year. The project was developed to manage the Brazos River Basin by controlling floods and providing water supply for the region.
The lake provides boat launch areas and camping spots, ranging from developed campgrounds with facilities to more natural settings for visitors. Follow local guidelines for boating, swimming, and fire safety to ensure a safe visit and help protect the natural surroundings.
The lake's water level fluctuates by several feet with rainfall and seasons, affecting fish habitat and the shoreline appearance. Submerged fish structures have been placed at specific locations to provide shelter for bass and other species, helping anglers locate productive fishing areas.
