Possum Kingdom State Park covers about 1,530 acres in the Palo Pinto Mountains and Brazos River Valley, bordering the 20,000-acre Possum Kingdom Lake. The lake winds 65 miles down the Brazos River with more than 300 miles of shoreline. Two open-air picnic shelters with flat corrugated metal roofs on dark metal posts stand on a dry lawn beside the water, each holding a metal picnic table.

Possum Kingdom State Park was built in the 1940s by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 2888 and opened to the public in 1950. It covers about 1,530 acres in the Palo Pinto Mountains and Brazos River Valley, bordering the 20,000-acre Possum Kingdom Lake. Wildfires forced a closure from April 15 to May 25, 2011; fires that began on August 30, 2011, burned into September without damaging the park.

The park's name comes from the Toadies' 1994 song "Possum Kingdom," which took its title from the park itself. Across the lake, Camp Grady Spruce faces Hell's Gate, a channel cut between an island and a line of cliffs. A privately owned store and marina inside the park serves boaters and campers.
