Lewisville, Suburban center in Denton County, Texas.
Lewisville is a city in Denton County in Texas, located about 20 miles northwest of Dallas. The urban area spreads across several residential districts, shopping zones and parks, while the large Lewisville Lake shapes the landscape to the north.
The area was settled in the 1840s as Holford's Prairie before it gained railway access in 1881. Official incorporation took place in 1925, after the place had served as a small trading station for decades.
The name comes from Baxter Lewis, an early settler and merchant who opened a trading post in 1853 and ran the area's only supply point for many years. Today several streets and buildings bear his name, while residents have long replaced the original farms with modern neighborhoods.
Several highways connect the city directly with Dallas and surrounding towns, while public transport also runs to Dallas. The lake to the north offers boat ramps and swimming spots that are especially busy on weekends.
In 1969 a large music festival took place here, with bands like Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin performing before tens of thousands of spectators. The event suddenly brought the small town international attention and is now considered an important chapter in American rock history.
