Orca Basin, Deep-sea depression in Gulf of Mexico, US
Orca Basin is a deep-sea depression along the continental slope in the Gulf of Mexico. A highly concentrated salt brine collects at the bottom, creating a distinct layer that is much denser than ordinary seawater.
The basin formed when ancient salt deposits dissolved and collapsed beneath overlying sediments. Over millions of years, this process concentrated heavy saltwater at the bottom of the depression.
Marine scientists conduct regular research expeditions to study the basin's microbial communities and collect sediment cores for climate analysis.
This location can only be studied using specialized equipment from research vessels departing coastal ports. The extreme depths and harsh conditions require heavy-duty remote-operated vehicles for any investigation.
The brine at the bottom is so concentrated that it forms a separate liquid layer where almost no life can survive. These extreme conditions allow researchers to discover specialized microorganisms found nowhere else on Earth.
