Davy Crockett Lake, body of water
Davy Crockett Lake is a reservoir in Fannin County, Texas, located about 14 miles northeast of Bonham within the Caddo National Grassland. It covers roughly 355 acres across Dixon and Sandy creeks, with two access points: Crockett East features a boat ramp managed by the US Forest Service, while Crockett West is designated for shore-based fishing only.
The lake was created in 1935 as part of a government public works program during the Great Depression. The surrounding area has a longer history tied to Native settlements and ranching that shaped the Texas landscape.
The lake is easily reached via FM 409, roughly 14 miles northeast of Bonham with parking and facilities at both access points. Both sites charge a fee and are open year-round, managed by the US Forest Service, so plan a daytime visit during good weather for the most enjoyable experience.
More than 40 percent of the lake surface is covered with native aquatic plants including floating leaves, emergent plants, and underwater grasses that support fish and wildlife. However, invasive species like hydrilla and curly-leaf pondweed are present near the boat ramp and require ongoing management to prevent them from taking over the water.
