Monmouth, Greek Revival mansion in Natchez, United States.
Monmouth is a two-story mansion with square columns, symmetrical facades, and stucco-covered brick construction set on 26 acres. The building blends different architectural styles and displays the typical form of a wealthy property from the 1800s.
John Hankinson built the original residence in 1818 in Federal style architecture. John Quitman later purchased the property in 1826 and had it redesigned in Greek Revival style.
The site displays original and reconstructed areas that reveal how people lived on a plantation before the Civil War. Visitors can see the different spaces where inhabitants worked and spent their daily lives.
The property operates as a luxury hotel with rooms, a restaurant, and a bar, so visitors can explore the grounds and interior. Guided tours are available during the day and provide deeper insight into the history and architectural details.
The property was saved in 1866 by three Quitman daughters who pooled their inheritance to preserve it. Their commitment allowed the mansion to survive through economic hardship and reach the present day.
